Dense pulses formed from fissioning internal waves

چکیده

Abstract Cold pulses generated by the fission of internal solitary waves over gentle slopes are an important source nutrients and relief from excess heat to benthic ecosystems. This numerical study investigates effect stratification form on produced propagating a smooth, gentle, linear topographic slope in 2D simulations. Three types investigated, namely (i) thin tanh (homogeneous upper lower layers separated pycnocline), (ii) surface (linearly stratified layer overlaying homogeneous layer) (iii) broad (continuous density gradient throughout water column). Incident wave amplitude was varied. In stratification, good agreement is seen with past studies, whilst dynamics observed very similar those stratification. However, due different incident waves, differ, but produce other stratifications. Pulse amplitude, wavelength propagation velocity found strongly depend each degenerate linearly as pulse propagates upslope.

From Topographic Internal Gravity Waves to Turbulence

Internal gravity waves are a key process linking the large-scale mechanical forcing of the oceans to small-scale turbulence and mixing. In this review, we focus on internal waves generated by barotropic tidal flow over topography. We review progress made in the past decade toward understanding the different processes that can lead to turbulence during the generation, propagation, and reflection...

Internal waves revisited

We describe a new laboratory technique that has been developed to examine the structure and amplitude of internal waves. As well as being relatively inexpensive to set up, the technique is sensitive to small density fluctuations: heat rising from a hand can easily be seen. If the internal wave field is uniform across the span of the tank, then the density gradient field can be measured non-intr...

Internal Solitary Waves

The basic theory of internal solitary waves is reviewed, with the main emphasis on applications to the many observations of such waves in shallow coastal seas, fjords, lakes and in the atmospheric boundary layer. Commencing with the equations of motion for an inviscid, incompressible density-stratified fluid, we describe asymptotic reductions to model long-wave equations, including the well-kno...

Atmospheric Internal Solitary Waves

The solitary waves that have been observed in the atmosphere fall broadly into two classes: those that propagate in a fairly shallow stratified layer near the ground and those that occupy the entire troposphere. We present a survey of the observations of both types of solitary waves. The generation mechanisms differ substantially for these two types of solitary waves. Those that propagate in a ...
